@Dennis,

AWesome story! Yeah we're entertaining the idea of Angel money, by that I mean seeing if it even makes sense for us or an angel, LOL. We're at a point where we can only do so much with FT Jobs, and 360 as a side, but not enough events to pay salary. I call it our critical mass event horizon, LOL.

Yeah I think bootstrapping definitely helps to make you more focused, vs. resting on fat piles of VC Money, which a lot of startups seem to do.

Guys, this is an excellent view into startup finances. Our startup faced the same issues-- and we chose to bootstrap rather than take VC funding (though we did have one angel-- Markus Frind).

What was good about bootstrapping: we learned to be self-sufficient quickly and took on whatever brought in revenue. We preserved our independence and ability to make decisions without controls in place.

What sucked about bootstrapping: We had to work twice as hard, since we didn't have the luxury of cash to work just on BlitzLocal for local professional service firms. It's like having a day and night job at the same time. We also weren't able to expand or move the core product as quickly as if we had a fat pile of VC money.

Net-net: We're happy with our decision. In doing "random" projects for cash, we've gained experience that helps our core business. And we've had a lot more fun along the way-- you meets lots of interesting people when your eyes are open.
